Bruce Sinclair, Canada
Bruce Sinclair grew up Métis in Northern Saskatchewan in a small town mostly populated by indigenous people. In this moving and sometimes funny performance he tells stories of a childhood marked by questions of identity, poverty, family relationships, discrimination and racism, but also by the indomitable spirit of his people. The Métis are sometimes referred to as “the forgotten people”, but Bruce prefers to call them “otipemisiwak”, “the people that own themselves”. The story is also a testimony of Bruce’s transformation into the knowledge of his Nêhiyaw (Cree) background which had previously been unknown to him.
