Titre: '' Catalysts for Water Oxidation,
CH Hydroxylation and Alcohol
Dehydrogenation.
Bob Crabtree (Yale Chemistry Dept.)''
Endroit : Pavillon Roger-Gaudry, salle M-415

Résumé : After a brief mention of our original hydrogenation catalyst from the 1970s, we move on to recent work in the title areas. A number of organoiridium-based catalyst precursors prove highly active for water oxidation driven either by electrolysis or by chemical oxidants. The active resting state species is found to be a coordination complex with a Ir(IV)—O—Ir(IV) core. This material binds irreversibly to oxide surfaces with full retention of catalytic activity. The same catalyst, applied to alkane oxidation, produces hydroxylation with retention of configuration at carbon, consistent with an oxene-like insertion mechanism. Related catalysts that bring about alcohol dehydrogenation have been applied to conversion of the biodiesel residue, glycerol, to lactic acid.
