Avec le projet Vibrare Colpi Benandanti*, Enrico Malatesta vise à engendrer des segments polyrythmiques complexes qui dérivent du contact des objets et des instruments de percussion, dont la vibration accentue divers éléments comme la dynamique, l’intention et la signature temporelle.

Malatesta analyse le potentiel de réponse et les différences morphologiques entre les objets, ce qui donne lieu à l’apparition de calibres microsoniques dans la multitude de corps en contact, par le biais de gestes spécifiques. Les objets sont laissés à vibrer librement dans l’espace, en s’engageant dans une activité rythmique indépendante.

La gestuelle de l’interprète détermine les conditions d’apparition de l’activité polyrythmique des instruments, en rejetant l’intention « musicale » et en mettant en avant une intention spatiale visant à modifier la réalité acoustique de l’environnement qui accueille la performance.

Né en 1985, Enrico Malatesta est un percussionniste italien qui travaille dans le domaine de la musique contemporaine. Il a étudié au Conservatoire de Cesena (Italie) en percussions classiques. Il collabore avec divers musiciens et artistes sonores, tels que Christian Wolfarth, Seijiro Murayama, Guiseppe Ielasi, Luciano Maggiore, entre autres; et il est un des membres fondateurs du group Glück où il se produit à côté de Burkhard Beins, Michael Vorfeld, ou encore, Ingar Zach. Malatesta a participé à plusieurs résidences et collaborations, notamment à Qo2 (Belgique, 2011 et 2012), Hotel Pupik (Autriche, 2011), A.I.R. Krems (Autriche, 2012), Careof/Fabbrica del Vapore (Italie, 2012). Il a présenté des concerts à travers l’Europe, au Japon et la Corée du Sud, et son travail a été diffusé par les labels Presto!? Records, Second Sleep, Senufo Editions, Entr’acte, Alku, Balloon and Needle. La recherche personnelle d’Enrico Malatesta vise la redéfinition du rôle du percussionniste dans divers domaines contemporains, en étudiant la dimension acoustique et la qualité matérielle des instruments de percussion. 

* Le titre du projet est un jeu de mots qui évoque, d’un côté, les Benandanti – un culte agraire de la fertilité en Italie durant la Renaissance, dont les membres s’engageaient dans des activités chamaniques; et de l’autre, l’indication ben-andanti, utilisée dans les partitions musicales classiques.

With the project Vibrare Colpi Benandanti*, Enrico Malatesta aspires to beget complex polyrhythmic segments that spawn from the contact between objects and percussion instruments, whose vibration emphasizes elements such as dynamics, intention or time signature.

Malatesta analyzes the feedback potential and the morphological differences between the objects, which results in the advent of micro-sonic gauges between the multitude of objects in contact and by means of specific gestures. The objects are left to freely vibrate in the space, while engaging in an independent rhythmic activity.

The performer’s gestures determine the conditions under which the instruments’ polyrhythmic activity appears, dismissing the « musical » intention and bringing forward a spatial intention that modifies the acoustic reality of the performance’s environment.

Born in 1985, Enrico Malatesta is an Italian percussionist working in the field of contemporary music. He studied at the Cesena Conservatory (Italy) in classical percussions. Enrico Malatesta’s personnal research aims to redefine the role of the percussionist in different contemporary spheres, by studying the acoustic dimension and the material quality of the percussion instruments.

* The title of the project is a pun alluding to, one on side, the Benandanti – an agrarian cult of fertility in Italy during the Renaissance, whose members engaged in shamanic activities ; and on the other, the indication ben-andanti, used in classical scores.

Stéphanie Grenier / Les puits de Camille

Récipiendaire du prix 2012-2013 l@ch@mbrebl@nche et de la bourse Première Ovation, et ancienne résidente dans notre Lab Web, Stéphanie Grenier présentera son œuvre Les puits de Camille pour conclure sa résidence de mentorat entamée en janvier 2013 et supervisée par Nicolas Lamoureux, spécialiste en technologie (du web à la stéréoscopie). Lors de cette résidence, l’artiste a été amenée à parfaire ses compétences de production d’images 3D stéréoscopiques et à expérimenter avec la capture et la projection d’images sous l’eau, le résultat visuel qui découle de l’utilisation de cette surface et les possibilités de présentation publique.

Lors de la présentation publique de la recherche menée, Grenier mettra en place deux installations vidéo (2D et 3D) qui étudient la notion d’errance onirique dans des espaces abandonnés, privés de présence humaine. L’unique protagoniste, l’artiste elle-même, visible de dos, est le repère visuel dans un monde contemplatif qui se tisse comme un rêve – les paysages s’entrelacent et s’enchaînent brusquement, en dépassant les limites physiques du corps humain qui s’y promène.

Née en 1988, Stéphanie Grenier vit et travaille actuellement à Québec. En 2012, elle a reçu le prix l@ch@mbrebl@nche qui souligne l’excellence de son travail par un accès à une résidence en art web au LabWeb de LA CHAMBRE BLANCHE, ainsi que le prix Desjardins Coup de cœur du jury, volet Art et culture. Stéphanie Grenier a participé à l’exposition « L’art à l’acte » regroupant les œuvres des finissants en arts visuels de l’École des arts visuels à l’Université Laval. Elle a présenté son travail vidéographique 3D dans le cadre de l’exposition individuelle « Les mirages de Camille » à la salle d’exposition du pavillon Alphonse-Desjardins de l’Université Laval, et elle a été invitée à participer dans le cadre des Journées de la Culture à l’automne 2012.la Culture.

Recipient of the 2012-2013 l@ch@mbrebl@nche prize and Première Ovation bursary, and previous resident in our Lab Web, Stéphanie Grenier will present her work Les puits de Camille in order to conclude her mentorship residency, initiated in January 2013 and supervized by the technology specialist Nicolas Lamoureux. During the residency, the artist was brought to refine her skills in 3D stereoscopic images production and to experiment with capturing and projecting images under water, the visual result of the use of this surface and the possibilities of public presentation.

During the public presentation of the conducted research, Grenier will display two video installations (2D and 3D) that study the notion of oneiric wandering through abandoned spaces, deprived of human presence. The sole protagonist, the artist herself, is the visual point of reference within a contemplative world weaving like a dream – landscapes intertwine and segue impetously, overstepping the physical limits of the human body roving through them.

Born in 1988, Stephanie Grenier currently lives and works in Quebec City. In 2012, she was awarded with l@ch@mbrebl@nche prize that emphasizes the excellency of her work giving her access to a web art residency at LA CHAMBRE BLANCHE’s WebLab, as well as the price Desjardins Jury’s favourite, in the section Art and Culture. Stephanie Grenier participated in the exhibition L’art à l’acte, that brought together the works of the Laval University visual arts graduate students. She exhibited her 3D video work within the framework of the solo exhibition Les rêves de Camille at the Alphonse-Desjardins pavillon exhibition space, Laval University, and she was invited to take part of Les Journées de la Culture (The Days of the Culture) in the automn 2012.
