Islamic unity in the age of ecumenism: Interpreting the importance of the World Muslim Congress

Conférence publique organisée par la Chaire de recherche du Canada Islam, Pluralisme et Globalisation de l'Université de Montréal.

Invité : Gavin Brockett (Wilfred Laurier University)

Résumé
The years following World War II witnessed concerted efforts to preserve international peace through the establishment of various transnational political, economic and religious organizations. Among these was the World Muslim Congress, formed in 1949 in Pakistan but influential throughout Africa, Asia and even Europe. Although many similar organizations exist today, the World Muslim Congress was the first to promote 'international Islam' and to emphasize that despite the rise of secular nationalism, religion remained an important factor. The challenge is to interpret the significance of international Islam over the past sixty years and to understand its relationship to the Islamism with which we are more familiar today.
