Family: An Exploration Through Film, Dialogue and Exhibitions

Veuillez noter que cette session sera donnée en anglais.

A three-part Wednesday evening lecture-workshop series
Part of McGill University's Personal and Cultural Enrichment (PACE) program

Families are a crucial starting point to our emerging commitment to social engagement. Families feed us, teach us and strengthen us. They are the constant point to which we go back to in order to evaluate our evolving sense of self. Over the course of this series, presented in collaboration with the National Film Board of Canada and the McCord Museum, we consider changes in how we see the family. Each evening showcases: screening of NFB films, a presentation by McGill faculty, a moderated discussion and the visit of a museum exhibit.

Wednesday April 10: Transmissions or Traditions. Held in collaboration with the McCord Museum's artist-in-residence exhibition with textile artist Marie-Claude Bouthillier, this session will investigate the transmission of tradition from one generation to the next and at the challenges that face one generation directly and trickle down to others.

Wednesday April 17: Our Families, Our Cities. This session presented in light of the permanent exhibition Montreal Points of View at the McCord Museum will explore how we retain our cultural roots in diverse and complex urban contexts. Film contributions from the NFB and a presentation by McGill faculty will look at the tension between traditions, cross-generational discourse within immigrant families and the expressions of multi-culturalism in an urban neighborhood.

Wednesday April 24: The New Children and Play in Post-modernity. This session held in conjunction with the McCord's yearly Toys exhibit will consider the changes to our definition of childhood - both here and abroad and will explore topics such as: childhood difficulties here and abroad, Quebec's Residential School history and/or inter-family interactions around the idea of play/playfulness.
