Co-hosted by the Institute for Gender, Sexuality, and Feminist Studies at McGill University, and Media@McGill, the Encounter is intended to create a contemplative space for personal reflection and facilitated discussion on the themes presented in the artworks. Avec cet atelier, nous explorons la fabrication de masques comme une pratique de résistance queer féministe contre les formes de reconnaissance faciale biométrique. Lors de la première partie de l’atelier, nous discutons des conséquences sociales et politiques des technologies biométriques dans des contextes locaux et globaux à travers des lectures communiquées préalablement. Puis, nous tentons de créer un « masque collectif » basé sur les données faciales des participant-es à l’atelier. Au cours de la seconde partie, nous organisons collectivement une intervention publique performative basée sur des lectures, des discussions et sur le processus de fabrication des masques.

Zach Blas est un artiste-théoricien dont le travail se situe aux intersections des médias en réseaux, du queerness et du politique. Étudiant au doctorat en Literature, Information Science + Information Studies, and Visual Studies à la Duke University, il est également le créateur du groupe d’art QueerTechnologies, un membre fondateur de The Public School Durham, et l’un des rédacteurs de la revue électronique Version. Actuellement, il est artiste/chercheur en résidence au bang.lab, University of California San Diego. Il a exposé et donné des conférences à travers le monde, notamment au Canada, en Angleterre, au Brésil, à Berlin, Istanbul, Madrid, New York, Mexico, Paris, Chicago, Singapour ainsi qu'à Los Angeles, où il a été co-commissaire de l'exposition collective Speculative en 2011. Zach a récemment publié dans le numéro Viral de Women Studies Quarterly, The Feminist and Queer Information Studies Reader et Depletion Design: A Glossary of Network Ecologies. In this workshop, we explore mask-making as a queer and feminist resistant practice against emerging forms of biometric facial recognition. In the first part of the workshop, we discuss the social and political impacts of biometric technologies in global and local contexts through pre-circulated readings. Then, we attempt to make a “collective mask,” based on the facial data of participants in the workshop. In the second part, we collectively organize a performative public intervention based on readings, discussions, and the mask-making process.

Zach Blas is an artist-theorist working at the intersections of networked media, queerness, and the political. He is a PhD candidate in Literature, Information Science + Information Studies, and Visual Studies at Duke University, creator of art group QueerTechnologies, a founding member of The Public School Durham, and a contributing editor for the online journal Version. Currently, he is an artist/researcher-in-residence at the bang.lab, University of California San Diego. He has exhibited and lectured around the world, including England, Berlin, Istanbul, Madrid, Canada, New York, Mexico, Paris, Brazil, Chicago, Singapore, and Los Angeles, where he co-curated the 2011 group exhibition Speculative. Zach has recently published writings in the Viral issue of Women Studies Quarterly, The Feminist and Queer Information Studies Reader, and Depletion Design: A Glossary of Network Ecologies.
