Green, Sustainability, Carbon Footprint are words that have become part of our modern vocabulary. Yet, though they are important concepts for us to consider, few of us fully understand their significance. Is “sustainable” another word for “ecological”? Do we as individuals have the power to affect positive change? These are just a few of the questions that we will address in this workshop.

We will present and discuss the key issues in “Sustainability”. What is it about and how we can participate in it? We will attempt to de-mystify information presented in the media, discuss some of the local issues and brainstorm some simple strategies for caring for the planet now and for future generations. Living Green is a lifestyle, a set of values and principles and perhaps the most viable solution to the environmental problems that we are facing today. We encourage workshop participants to bring any issues of concern, ideas for discussion and above all else, a belief that every action (big or small) can have a positive impact. Any shade of green is a step in the right direction.
Facilitators

Deborah Dimitruk is an environmentalist and yoga practitioner and is currently employed at McGill University. She is an ambassador for the Office of Sustainability at McGill and is a member of the executive for Eco Pointe-Claire, an organization dedicated to promoting environmental awareness in her local community. She is currently working to develop a broad-based water conservation campaign for Lac St. Louis. Deborah Dimitruk has developed and coordinated events in the education sector, the health food industry and many community organizations for the last 20+ years. She has a Bachelor of Commerce and is completing a Graduate Diploma in Community Economic Development. She adopted a greener lifestyle when her children were very young, believing that living in harmony with nature and caring for the planet were values to be embraced and passed along. She “low-impact” commutes; she composts, pre-cycles, recycles & upcycles almost everything and her carbon footprint is measured at 9.45 metric tons of CO2 (Canadian average is 19.6 metric tons).

Lilith Wyatt’s passion is co-creating change by building community around a shared vision for a better future. Her area of expertise is in transformative sustainability education. She holds a B.Sc. (combined honours) in environmental science and international development, and an M.A. in environmental education and communication. Her research has explored experiences that transform participants and develop an environmental orientation. This interest has taken her across Canada, throughout South America, to New Zealand, and to Antarctica. She is currently the administrator for the Sustainability Projects Fund at McGill University, overseeing the implementation of 82 (and counting) student- and staff-led projects, worth $1.8M, that build a culture of sustainability on campus.
