“You matter because you are you. You matter up to the last moment of your life, and we will do all we can, not only to help you die peacefully, but also to live until you die.” Cicely Saunders

Death is the inevitable unknown with which we must all eventually grapple – either in ourselves or in supporting those close to us. As in all things, the more we know the better choices we can make. This workshop provides an opportunity for individuals to enhance their capacity to respond to and deal with death through an increased knowledge of palliative care and of the tools that make it up. In this interactive 2-day workshop, we will explore the following:

Death in Canadian Society and Palliative Care – An Overview
The Dying Process -- Emotional reactions and responses to dying
Communication -- Effective communication in end-of-life and palliative care
Personal Care -- Practical methods for providing assistance
Pain and Symptom Control --Management techniques
Death -- Recognizing the signs and what to do
The Grief Process -- How it affects individuals and methods of coping
Stress Management -- Unique stresses of palliative care
