Danse archétypale, Barravento flirte avec les transes de possession, réminiscence de l’état de confusion qui fait perdre pied à l’initié au candomblé. Nouvelle voix en danse sur la scène montréalaise, Maria Isabel Rondon possède déjà une signature unique où fusionnent des éléments de la capoeira, des danses des Orixas – divinités afro-brésiliennes – à un langage résolument contemporain. Ses chorégraphies se démarquent par leurs géométries surprenantes et le caractère animal du mouvement. La chorégraphe partage la scène avec trois interprètes – Myriam Farger, Fedora Mathieu, Mika Lilit Lior –, et ensemble, ils s’engagent dans une expérience du corps plus grand que nature. Ayant grandi avec trois cultures – né d’un père dominicain, d’une mère québécoise et élevé par un beau-père libanais –, Maria Isabel Rondon est à l’image du Montréal d’aujourd’hui : métissé, pluriel et éclaté. En 2007, elle performe au Brésil pour les Vera Passos, Annette Irene Jakobsen et Carlos Moraes. Audacieuse et charismatique, Rondon chorégraphie et interprète trois solos : Àguas (2007), Ogum et Cara (2006). Barravento est sa première chorégraphie de groupe, dont la première version fut présentée, en 2011, au Festival Lusarts, puis en 2012, au Festival Vue sur la relève et au concours Mon accès à la scène où elle rafle le 1er prix.

Having the great distinction of launching the MAI’s 14th performing arts season, Maria Isabel Rondon is premiering a new adaptation of Barravento, a 2012 Mon accès à la scène award-winning choreography. Barravento flirts with trances of possession, reminiscent of the states of confusion experienced by initiates to the religion Candomblé. A new figure on the Montreal dance scene, Maria Isabel Rondon already possesses a unique signature in which elements of capoeira and the dances of the Orixas – Afro-Brazilian deities – fuse with a resolutely contemporary language. Her choreographies stand out for their astonishing geometry and the animal nature of their movement. The choreographer shares the stage with three dancers– Myriam Farger, Fedora Mathieu, Mika Lilit Lior – together, they prsent a larger than life experience of the body.  Born of a Dominican father, a Québécoise mother and raised by a Lebanese stepfather, Maria Isabel Rondon grew up within three distinct cultures and is a true reflection of the Montreal of today : plural and dynamic. Bold and charismatic in style, Rondon has choreographed and performed three solo: Aguas (2007), Ogum and Cara (2006). Barravento is her first group choreography. The first version was presented in 2011 as part of the Festival Lusarts, followed in 2012 with performances at Vue sur la relève and Mon accès à la scène where she was awarded first prize.
