Sa conférence s'intitule : Tales from Two Cities: Urban Agriculture Research in Portland, Oregon & Oakland, California.
As in Montreal, urban agriculture is spreading rapidly across cities throughout the United States. Food justice activists, urban homesteaders, and policy makers alike are converging on urban agriculture as a means to improve environmental sustainability, food security, and public health. Portland, Oregon and Oakland, California, are both known for their progressive politics and their urban agriculture. However, while these two Left Coast cities have a lot in common, urban agriculture seems to have taken root for different reasons. In this presentation, I provide an overview of the urban agriculture movements that are growing in popularity in both cities, as well as discuss my research efforts in both cities in which I link urban history and geography with environmental science, food systems planning, and community participation.
