Class Actress is a Brooklyn-based synthpop trio, consisting of singer-songwriter Elizabeth Harper and producers/keyboardists Scott Rosenthal and Mark Richardson. Initially, Harper pursued a career as an indie rock musician in Los Angeles, but upon hearing a remix by Richardson of one of her songs, she favored the electronic production over the acoustic original and decided to relocate to Brooklyn to collaborate with Richardson.
There, the duo transformed Harper's previous guitar-based sound into more synth-driven instead, which consequently formed Class Actress. Soon after formation, Rosenthal joined the group. They took their name from a joke about Harper's former choice to pursue drama major in college.
Penguin Prison is Chris Glover from New York, who first rose to prominence with a college band called “The Smartest People at Bard”, whose demos came to the attention of Q-Tip and, through him, Interscope. A solo album for the Universal label followed in 2009 but it attracted scant attention, so in the same year Glover left, took up the new moniker and began gaining recognition with remixes, amongst others, for Goldfrapp, Marina & the Diamonds, Passion Pit.
