Where do Art and Technology Meet?: The work of Steve Bates at FOFA Gallery

In an age when the line between the actual and the virtual is rapidly dissolving, how and where do we locate ourselves as consumers of visual and digital culture? How does art play a role in the constant integration of our private and public lives? What are the consequences of the ever-expanding technology in how our world increasingly views itself? Through a series of gallery visits, artist talks and group discussions, invited artists and curators will illustrate the relationships between images, sounds, and technologies of contemporary culture and the complexities of our ubiquitous digital landscape.

We will visit the main exhibit at Concordia’s FOFA Gallery, located at 1515 Ste-Catherine O. The exhibit, which runs form April 3rd to May 25th, features the work of emerging New Media artist Steve Bates. Bates, whose work was recently featured in the Quebec Triennial at the MACM, is an audio artist currently living in Montréal. His work in music has traveled from early punk rock experiments to his current use of computers and cheap electronics in performance and recording projects. Following the gallery visit, the series participants and I will discuss the role of the university art gallery and how this structure, and the FOFA gallery in particular, attempts to integrate experimental technology-driven art work in an institutional setting. Do students really act as a mass audience? Is the university gallery a place for learning? Or is it an extension of the museum institution?
