« ŒUVRES CHOISIES : 1970-1980 » L’œuvre de Ron Martin s’apparente à l’expressionnisme abstrait et à l’école de New York, dont les figures importantes sont Willem de Kooning, Franz Kline, Robert Motherwell, Jackson Pollock et Clyfford Still. Sa série de peintures noires (1971-1981) fait par ailleurs écho à une période similaire du peintre De Kooning (1946-1949) pendant laquelle ce dernier explore l’abstraction au moyen de compositions all-over, exclusivement noir et blanc. À sa manière, Ron Martin découvre une gestuelle forte et fluide, appuyée par une matière dense et une composition à tout le moins agitée, à l’exemple de l’artiste new-yorkais. En d’autres mots, Martin conserve l’élégance, l’intransigeance et la puissance de cette école de peintres marquants du siècle dernier.

Ron Martin’s work recalls the New York School made famous byabstract expressionists like Willem de Kooning, Franz Kline, Robert Motherwell, Jackson Pollock, and Clyfford Still. His Black Paintings (1971–1981) are reminiscent of a similar period in De Kooning’s work (1946–1949) when the artist explored abstraction through “all-over” composition, working exclusively in black and white. But Ron Martin forged his own path with vigorous and fluid gestural works featuring thickly applied paint and agitated composition not unlike the illustrious New Yorker’s. In other words, Ron Martin perpetuates the powerful, unyielding, elegant vision of this school of painters that left such a profound mark on 20th century art.
