L’exposition de Manuel Mathieu propose un univers déconstruit et décharné, peuplé de personnages éclatés qui s’y réinventent. Le corpus d’œuvres réunit une série de peintures sur châssis et conçues in situ pour l’architecture propre de la galerie. Prémices / Open-ended suggère une atmosphère d’après catastrophe et de réinvention où des personnages en mutation – des apparitions mi-abstraites, mi-figuratives en décomposition – évoluent dans un passage guidé vers le renouveau. Une installation picturale inédite, un parcours spatial qui installe un dialogue fécond pour ces empreintes post-traumatiques.


Né à Port-au-Prince en 1986, Manuel Mathieu vit et travaille à Montréal. Sa pratique touche à la peinture, à la photographie, à la vidéo et à l’installation caractérisée par une fascination pour le déplacement et l’intemporalité. Depuis 2007, cet artiste émergent a présenté une exposition solo à la Galerie Monnin de Port-au-Prince. En plus d’avoir été présentées à l’exposition encan HAÏTI ACTION à la Maison des artistes à Paris et à quelques foires internationales, ses œuvres se retrouvent dans plusieurs collections privées.



Manuel Mathieu’s exhibition presents a deconstructed and stripped down world inhabited by the fractured and the fragmented. This new body of work consists of a series of paintings as well as works created in situ and in direct response to the gallery space. Prémices / Open-ended suggests a post-cataclysmic atmosphere, an atmosphere of reconstruction, where characters in the process of mutating—quasi-abstract, quasi-figurative spectres—morph along a path leading to renewal. This image-based installation sparks a fertile dialogue, especially for those marked by trauma.


Born in Port-au-Prince in 1986, Manuel Mathieu lives and works in Montreal. His work encompasses painting, photography, video and installation and is propelled by a fascination with displacement and timelessness. In 2007, this emerging artist presented his first solo exhibition at the Galerie Monnin in Port-au-Prince. In addition to having participated in the HAÏTI ACTION auction at the Maison des artistes in Paris and in several international shows, his works have made their way into several private collections.
