Samantha Savage Smith
Western Famine / Arts&Crafts
Samantha Savage Smith is a pixie sized, blonde, blue-eyed, knock out visually and vocally. With the voice, the songs, the skills, the confidence and enough chunky guitar riffs in her 24 year-old little finger, to instantly captivate and charm any audience.
The Calgary-based, singer-songwriter’s debut album, “Tough Cookie” will be released on September 6, 2011 on Western Famine and via Arts & Crafts distribution. Heavily influenced by blues, jazz, and indie-rock and inspired by her love of classic interpreters such as Anita O’Day and Billie Holiday as well as present-day songsmiths like St. Vincent and Dan Auerbach of The Black Keys, the album is a nod to her musical muses, filtered through Samantha’s quirky and introspective style. Samantha gives us sparse, stripped-down accompaniments that support her pretty melodies and heart-on-her-sleeve, personal lyrics. As Samantha says about her music, “I sing about sad shit, but in an upbeat way! Let’s get moody with it!”
“...an incredibly self-assured first recording... wounded-angel vocals (are similar to) Feist (and) Cat Power... her adept songwriting skills belie her youth.” - Lisa Wilton, Calgary Sun
The album is immense, loud & a bit brash at times, then soft and soothing the next... songs that still connect while being diverse... The voice of this woman is so distinct & powerful it would be a shame to overlook the obviousness of it due to it being so, well…fantastic. Her deep and powerful (almost out of body) vocals polish off these songs, it is the missing instrument in most any other band.-
